Davitt College has an extensive extra curricular programme which caters for the sporting and leisure needs of the students. The provision of a wide range of extra-curricular activities makes an enormous contribution to the life of the school. The involvement in such activities complements the work that takes place in the classroom and gives the students an opportunity to develop their talents, social skills, and self-confidence and leadership qualities. Here at Davitt College we are very fortunate to have a large number of staff who selfishly train and look after their teams at lunch-time and after school in preparation for inter-school competition.
Apart from the all important health benefits, sport provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn new skills, nurture self-confidence and maximise their own unique potential. With these benefits in mind Davitt College students are encouraged to participate in the dynamic extra curricular sports programme on offer.
The school is represented in Gaelic, Soccer, Basketball, Rugby, Badminton, Golf, Athletics, Camogie and Cross Country. Davitt College has won both County titles and Connacht titles in Gaelic, Basketball and Soccer. We have won an All-Ireland Senior Girls Basketball title and narrowly lost out in 5 Senior Boys Gaelic titles. The school is proud of the present and past pupils who have achieved high honors in their chosen sport. Alan Dillion has being a key figure of the Mayo senior Gaelic panel and received an All-Star award in 2006. Ray Moylette another past pupil was the first Irish person to win a world junior boxing medal.
Although success can be measured by the large numbers participating in sport, it is rewarding also to see success in the trophy cabinet! Participation in a non-competitive environment is also actively encouraged.
With the completion of our new state of the art sports Hall in sight and the growth of our enrolment the future of the sport in the school looks bright.
Davitt College Annual Sports Day
Every year students look forward to participating in our school sports day. This is a great day for all the students to take part in a variety of sports from soccer to wellie throwing. The day has plenty for all tastes with bouncing castles, novelty races and tug o’ war, but the highlight of the day is the teacher versus students match. There is always something for everyone to do.
