Davitt College Selected to Pioneer New ‘Politics and Society’ Subject

🏛️ Curriculum Innovation • Leaving Certificate 2016 Davitt College Selected to Pioneer New ‘Politics and Society’ Subject 8 March 2016 • National Curriculum Launch A brand new subject has been developed for the Leaving Certificate programme called Politics and Society, and we are incredibly proud to announce that Davitt College has been selected as one of a small number of schools nationally to introduce it on a phased basis! Starting this coming September 2016, this optional subject will be available to our senior students, with the very first Leaving Certificate Politics and Society examinations set to take place in June 2018. “We are delighted that our school has been selected to introduce Leaving Certificate Politics and Society from this coming September. Politics and Society is a very exciting and rewarding subject that will suit any student who is interested in human rights, equality, diversity, sustainable development, power, and democratic decision-making.” — Ms. Bernie Rowland, Principal Studying this subject will give students a real, practical insight into people, power, and how society functions. It will be assessed at both Ordinary and Higher Levels, featuring two core components: a written examination accounting for 80% of the final grade, and a hands-on citizenship project accounting for 20%. This project will allow students to research a topic they are passionate about and apply their learning in action. “The introduction of Politics and Society in Davitt College complements the already very wide range of subjects we offer to students in the Leaving Certificate Programme. Davitt College Student Attends Poetry Masterclass with Paul Muldoon

✍️ Literary Excellence • National Poetry Masterclass Davitt College Student Attends Poetry Masterclass with Paul Muldoon 2 March 2016 • Poetry Ireland: Writers in Schools Laura Ryan, a Fifth Year student here at Davitt College, was one of only ten students nationwide invited to attend a highly prestigious poetry masterclass with internationally acclaimed poet Paul Muldoon. Mr. Muldoon has been described as ‘the most significant English-language poet born since the Second World War’. He is the author of twelve major collections of poetry, serves as Professor of Creative Writing at Princeton University, acts as the poetry editor of The New Yorker, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2003. This incredible event was organised by Poetry Ireland: Writers in Schools and was held in the Lexicon Library, Dún Laoghaire, in March 2016. The purpose of the workshop was to nurture young poets who have demonstrated exceptional insight and flair in their own poetry, giving them expert guidance with the writing process. Laura’s outstanding poetic works warranted her an exclusive invitation to this highly esteemed workshop. 🇩🇪 Deutschmobil • Language & Culture Deutsche Mobil Language Seminar Visits Davitt College 3 March 2016 • Goethe-Institut Initiative Davitt College was delighted to welcome the Deutschmobil Language Seminar team on Wednesday, 2nd March and Thursday, 3rd March 2016. Sponsored by the Goethe-Institut, this fantastic initiative aims to promote and support the learning of the German language across Ireland. The seminars proved to be incredibly engaging and inspiring for all involved. The visiting team from the Goethe-Institut, Katharina and Konstantine, were absolutely fantastic. They brought wonderful energy to the classrooms, actively encouraging and motivating our German language students throughout their visit. It was a highly successful two days, and Davitt College very much looks forward to welcoming the team back again in the new 2016–2017 academic year! 🇩🇪📚✨ ×

National Literary Success for Davitt College Student

✍️ Literary Achievement • National Competition National Literary Success for Davitt College Student 13 October 2015 • Wild Words Anthology A massive congratulations to Davitt College student Lauren Bright, who has enjoyed tremendous success in this year’s Wild Words Short Story Writing Competition! Following her excellent submission, Lauren’s story was officially selected for inclusion in Wild Words Volume 3—a prestigious anthology featuring short stories and poems by talented young authors from all over Ireland and the UK. As part of this brilliant achievement, Lauren was also invited to attend an exclusive two-day writing masterclass with some of Ireland’s leading authors and publishing industry experts. Lauren recently attended the official festival launch for the third volume of Wild Words in August, where she celebrated alongside other budding authors and the festival’s special guest, broadcaster Ray D’Arcy. This is a fantastic accomplishment for Lauren. 🏆 Literary Achievement • National Winner Davitt College Celebrates All-Ireland Literary Winner Emily Nolan 13 August 2014 • Davitt College, Castlebar Davitt College, Castlebar, is absolutely thrilled to celebrate a landmark national achievement in creative writing. Emily Nolan, an exceptionally talented Fifth Year student, has been officially announced as the All-Ireland Winner of the Senior Category in the prestigious John West Fantasy Writing Competition 2014. Emily’s creative flair and narrative mastery outshone entries from across the country to secure the top spot in this highly competitive national tournament. To mark the momentous occasion, An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, TD, visited Davitt College recently. During his visit, the Taoiseach was delighted to meet with the young author and was presented with a personal copy of Emily’s winning short story, titled “Run for your Money”. ✍️ Literary Event • Guest Speaker 2014 Award-Winning Irish Poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin Visits Davitt College 26 February 2014 In January 2014, Fifth Year English students at Davitt College were honoured with a deeply memorable visit from one of Ireland’s most significant and celebrated contemporary poets, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin. It is broadly acknowledged that her poems open many doors to multiple worlds, utilizing dense, captivating soundscapes and a distinctive magic that proves to be essential to our understanding of the world around us. Having studied her prescribed poetry in depth earlier in the academic year, the students found this firsthand encounter to be an incredibly educational and rewarding milestone. 📝 Demystifying the Leaving Certificate Syllabus Acknowledging that Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin’s work is best known for its mysterious imagery and enigmatic layers of interpretation, the Davitt College English Department sought to demystify her work by arranging the personal visit. When the students initially encountered her prescribed text, they were captivated by the thematic insights she provided on issues of a personal, mythical, and universal nature. Having the poet herself walk through the school doors to provide direct context will benefit these students immensely as they prepare for their Leaving Certificate Examination in 2015. ✨ An Inspiring Literary Exchange Upon her arrival, Eiléan highlighted the vital importance of the arts within society, speaking passionately about the power and influence that literature in all its forms can have on individual lives. She generously welcomed questions and open discussion from the students regarding her life, her creative process, and how her experiences relate to the various themes within her writing. By providing profound, unique insights into each poem on the Leaving Certificate course, she offered a deeply personal and relatable approach to the syllabus. The students found the experience both invigorating and inspirational—an extraordinary opportunity that they thoroughly enjoyed and one that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

☘️ Irish Literature • Senior Cycle Enrichment Renowned Irish Poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill Hosts Special Reading at Davitt College 11 January 2013 • Davitt College Castlebar Davitt College was privileged to welcome Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, one of the most prominent and celebrated figures in contemporary Irish literature, for an exclusive guest lecture and poetry reading. On November 23rd, our Fifth and Sixth Year Gaeilge students gathered on campus for a unique opportunity to experience a personal reading of Nuala’s celebrated work, ‘Mo Ghrá-Sa (Idir Lúibíní)’. 📚 Syllabus Enrichment As a core prescribed poem on the Leaving Certificate Irish syllabus, having the author herself deliver the text provided an unparalleled learning experience for our Senior Cycle students. 🖋️ Author Insights Nuala shared profound insights into the poem’s satirical layers, its modern commentary on traditional love poetry, and the creative processes that shape her writing in the Irish language. “Hearing the rhythm and nuance of the text read directly by the poet helped demystify the work for our Senior Cycle students. Renowned Author Gabriel Rosenstock Inspires Students at Davitt College

🎨 Creative Arts • Cross-Curricular Literature Renowned Author Gabriel Rosenstock Inspires Students at Davitt College 5 January 2013 • Davitt College Castlebar Davitt College, Castlebar, was incredibly fortunate to welcome the celebrated Irish translator, playwright, poet, and children’s author, Gabriel Rosenstock, for a special guest visit and creative workshop. Organized in conjunction with the Indian Cultural Festival at the Linenhall Arts Centre, the visit provided an inspiring intersection of literature, visual art, and world heritage for our Junior Cycle students. ✍️ Creative Collaboration Exploring Aphorisms & Visual Art In preparation for the visit, Second Year students from Ms. Morrissey’s Gaeilge class and Ms. Silke’s Art class collaborated on an innovative project studying Mr. Rosenstock’s collection of aphorisms—crafting their own written insights and vibrant visual artwork in response. Gaeilge & Poetry Visual Arts 🌏 Global Culture & Creative Inspiration During his session with the students, Gabriel Rosenstock reflected on his prolific literary career and the profound creative inspiration he has gathered from his extensive travels across India.
