🇪🇺 Global Outlook • Erasmus+ Accreditation Davitt College Celebrates Prestigious Erasmus+ School Accreditation and Flag-Raising Ceremony 4 September 2024 Davitt College, Castlebar, has officially been recognised as an Erasmus+ Accredited School, marking a major milestone in the school’s commitment to internationalised education. This prestigious status, awarded as part of the European Union Erasmus+ Programme (2021–2027), secures long-term funding for the school to participate in cross-border educational mobility and collaborative European projects. To celebrate this achievement, students and staff gathered for an official flag-raising ceremony. The Erasmus+ flag was hoisted at the front of the school building, where it now flies proudly as a symbol of the school’s global outlook and interconnected learning environment. Driving Educational Excellence Across Europe This formal accreditation opens up incredible pathways for the entire Davitt College community, including: Student Exchange Programmes: Giving students the unique opportunity to experience European cultures, practice modern languages, and collaborate on shared academic initiatives with partner schools across the EU. Professional Development: Enabling teaching staff to engage in international training and job-shadowing, bringing innovative European pedagogical methodologies straight back into Castlebar classrooms. 🕯️ Community Care • Transition Year Service Dignity and Compassion: Transition Year Students Support ATU Remembrance Service 26 February 2024 A group of our Transition Year students recently participated in a deeply poignant Remembrance Service held at ATU Castlebar. The annual ecumenical service was organised to offer comfort, solidarity, and support to local families who have experienced the devastating loss of a baby or a child. Representing the Davitt College community with exemplary maturity, our students took an active role in the candle ceremony and distributed custom prayer cards thoughtfully created by class 4A. Participating in an occasion of such profound local significance is an immense privilege, and our students are to be commended for the extraordinary dignity, empathy, and respect they demonstrated throughout the evening. 🕯️🕊️🤍 ×

🎓 Alumni Success • Academic Excellence Law & Politics Scholar Aisling Walsh Honoured at UCD Entrance Ceremony! 30 March 2023 • University College Dublin A massive congratulations to our past student Aisling Walsh (Leaving Certificate Class of 2022) who was officially presented with a prestigious academic award at the University College Dublin Entrance Scholars Ceremony! This special university celebration recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of elite incoming students across the country who secured 560 points or more in their Leaving Certificate exams. Aisling’s phenomenal results are a testament to her incredible work ethic, dedication, and passion for social sciences during her time here at Davitt College! Aisling is currently pursuing her passion for justice and governance by studying for her Degree in Law and Politics within the world-class UCD School of Law. We are incredibly proud to see our graduates thriving at the highest academic levels. As the largest provider of multi-denominational education in Ireland, the 16 national ETBs serve as a vital cornerstone for inclusive, modern learning within our local communities. Throughout this week-long celebration, our Religious Education department is showcasing the diverse and essential services that ETBs provide nationwide. From Community National Schools and Colleges to adult, youth, and further training facilities, the sector remains fully committed to nurturing spaces where every learner is valued. To mark this historic decennial milestone, our students are participating in a series of special classroom initiatives and reflective activities designed to highlight our core values of care, equality, and community. 💡 Sustainability • Classroom Initiatives 1st Year Energy Saving Posters 21 May 2021 • Geography Department Our 1B and 1F classes have been incredibly busy learning about energy conservation and sustainability in their Geography lessons recently. To help spread awareness throughout the school community, the students channeled their creativity into designing a series of vibrant, educational posters on this very valuable topic. Their work highlights excellent practical tips for saving energy both at home and at school, proving that small changes can make a massive difference. 🎄 Student Showcase • English & Wood Technology First Year Festive Showcase: Christmas Cards & Wood Technology Creations Davitt College First Year Showcase As the winter term drew to a close, our multi-talented First Year students were incredibly busy channeling their festive creativity across different departments to craft beautiful seasonal gifts for their family and friends. ✍️ Seasonal Poetry & Christmas Cards in 1E English In the English department, students in class 1E worked exceptionally hard to compose imaginative Christmas poems and design beautifully styled seasonal greeting cards. The students combined their developing literacy skills with artistic flair to create thoughtful, heartfelt messages for their loved ones, spreading plenty of holiday cheer through the written word. 🪚 Handcrafted Decorations in Wood Technology Meanwhile, the practical rooms were buzzing with activity as First Year students put their design and manufacturing skills to the test in Wood Technology. Over several weeks, the students carefully planned, cut, and sanded beautiful wooden Christmas decorations. These custom pieces make for wonderful, lasting keepsakes that will undoubtedly hold pride of place on Christmas trees at home for years to come. We are incredibly proud of the hard work, craftsmanship, and imagination demonstrated by our First Years across both disciplines! 🎄✨🎅🪵🎁👏 ×

🇪🇺 European Youth Parliament • International Delegation Leaving Certificate Student Michael Fleming Selected for European Youth Parliament 23 October 2019 • Davitt College Castlebar Davitt College, Castlebar, extends its proudest congratulations to Leaving Certificate student Michael Fleming, who achieved the exceptional honor of being selected to represent Ireland at the international stage of the European Youth Parliament (EYP). Michael was one of just six young people chosen from across the entire country to form the Irish delegation. He travelled to Germany to participate in the prestigious 91st International Session of the European Youth Parliament, which took place in Hamburg. During the session, Michael and his fellow delegates collaborated with hundreds of peers from across Europe, engaging in intense committee work, debating pressing global issues, and drafting formal resolutions on European policy. This selection is a testament to Michael’s outstanding public speaking abilities, leadership skills, and keen interest in international affairs. Prestigious Inaugural Joe McDonagh Award for Davitt College

🏆 National Award • Irish Culture & Heritage Prestigious Inaugural Joe McDonagh Award for Davitt College 17 October 2019 • ETBI National Awards The Education and Training Board of Ireland (ETBI) has proudly announced that Davitt College is this year’s joint winner of the ETBI National Joe McDonagh Award 2019. 🏆 Honouring a Champion of Irish Culture This prestigious award celebrates Irish culture, Irish heritage, and the Irish language. The late Joe McDonagh was a former Chief Executive Officer of Galway VEC and, more recently, the Chief Executive of the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board. He was an enthusiastic Gaeilgeoir and a passionate champion of education, the GAA, and Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. 🏅 A Winning Night in Athlone The official Awards Ceremony was held in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, on the 25th of September 2019. Students from Davitt College, accompanied by their teacher Mrs. Fiona O’Connor, were absolutely thrilled to receive the Joe McDonagh Trophy, alongside a €1,000 scholarship dedicated to the continued promotion of Irish culture, language, and heritage within the school. 🤝 Creative and Inclusive Storytelling The school’s winning entry comprised a beautifully crafted short film featuring a re-enactment of the famous Irish folklore legend, Cú Chulainn. This highly creative project was voiced over in Irish, subtitled in English, and fully signed using Irish Sign Language (ISL). 1916 Centenary Commemorations at Davitt College

🇮🇪 1916 Centenary • National Commemoration 1916 Centenary Commemorations at Davitt College 16 March 2016 • Davitt College Castlebar There was singing, poetry reading, striking works of art, and poignant recollections of the heroes who fought and died in events in Ireland 100 years ago. And there was much more. Davitt College embraced the centenary challenge with enthusiasm and creativity. Months of hard work from the 1916 Committee in Davitt College culminated in a unique and unforgettable day of remembrance and vision. The event started with wonderful music from the Davitt College Orchestra under the excellent direction of Music Teacher, Ms. Claire Kennedy. The Fifth Year History classes worked on writing biographies of the seven signatories of the Proclamation, whilst the Second Year Art classes created poignant sketches of the leaders. We were privileged to welcome Mr. Noel Campbell from The National Museum of Ireland in Turlough and author of “A History of Castlebar”, who spoke in detail about the 1916 events in Mayo and the effect they had on local communities. Ms. Bernie Rowland, Principal, spoke about the significance of the Proclamation and its influence on the new generation, as well as the vital importance of mutual respect in all aspects of life. The reading of the Proclamation by Leaving Certificate student Thomas Mongey was then followed by the solemn raising of the flag by Fifth Year students Michael Graven and Eoin O’Doherty. It really was a most special and memorable day for the entire school community. 🇮🇪📜🎻 ×
