🕊️ UN Peacekeeping & History Jadotville Veterans Deliver United Nations Briefing 21 April 2026 Politics & Society Students Welcome Historic UN Peacekeepers Our Fifth and Sixth Year Politics and Society students had the extraordinary privilege of welcoming historic veteran Captain Noel Carey and his son, Colonel Paul Carey, to the social science lab. Captain Carey, one of the heroic figures who fought in the famous Siege of Jadotville during the 1961 United Nations mission in the Congo, delivered a deeply moving and powerful first-hand account of his experiences. He detailed the strategic decisions, human rights challenges, and immense resilience shown by A Company 35th Irish Battalion under siege. Following this historical perspective, Colonel Paul Carey provided an excellent, modern briefing on his own senior leadership roles within active UN peacekeeping operations. His talk gave students a direct look into how international treaties, conflict resolution strategies, and Ireland’s continuous contribution to global peace and security operate on the ground today. This was an inspiring, unforgettable opportunity for our classes to see textbook themes in global politics come to life through real-world defenders of human rights!

🎵 Creative Arts & Politics • Transition Year Workshop ATU Sligo Politics Chair Dr Eamonn Furey Sparking Creative Songwriting Action with TY Teams! 23 February 2026 Our Transition Year spaces were absolutely buzzing with energy this week as we welcomed the brilliant Dr Eamonn Furey, Programme Chair of Sociology and Politics at ATU Sligo, to lead a fantastic, high-octane creative arts workshop! 🌟 As a proud Creative School, we love pushing the boundaries of traditional learning. Dr Furey guided our students through a fascinating deep-dive into music as a political art form, tracking how iconic tracks, rhythms, and poetry have historically been used to champion human rights, challenge systemic inequalities, and give a powerful voice to local communities on the global stage. Inspired by these legendary protest anthems, our students stepped up to the microphone themselves! Working in collaborative production teams, they brainstormed, drafted, and boldly performed their own original political lyrics—tackling modern global issues with incredible maturity, sharp wit, and rhythm. It was an invigorating showcase of musical creativity, confidence, and raw talent. Huge thanks to Dr Furey for inspiring our next generation of creative changemakers! 👏 ×

Davitt College Students Embark on Erasmus Adventure in Brussels

🇪🇺 Erasmus+ • European Adventure Davitt College Students Embark on Erasmus Adventure in Brussels 8 October 2025 A group of 36 students and four teachers from Davitt College recently returned from a highly enriching Erasmus trip to Brussels, Belgium, where they immersed themselves in culture, education, and European institutions. 🌍 Broadening Horizons The four-day programme offered students a unique chance to broaden their horizons through both educational and cultural experiences. One of the major highlights of the trip was a visit to an international school, where students were able to observe classes and engage directly with their European peers. Our teachers also had the fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with their international colleagues, gaining fresh perspectives on global education. 🏛️ Exploring Cultural Treasures The group thoroughly explored Belgium’s cultural treasures. A guided city tour of Brussels introduced the students to the vibrant heart of Europe, taking in everything from its historic squares to its striking modern institutions. They also enjoyed a beautiful day trip to Bruges, discovering the medieval charm of the canals, cobblestone streets, and the rich heritage of the UNESCO World Heritage city. 🇪🇺 The European Parliament A central part of the Erasmus experience was a visit to the European Parliament. Students were given an in-depth tour of the Parliament buildings, learning exactly how European democracy functions in practice. The visit was made even more memorable by a special meeting with Mr. Olaf Gill, who generously shared his expertise on European institutions and communication. His insights truly inspired the group to think more deeply about the importance of international cooperation and active citizenship. This Erasmus trip proved to be an unforgettable experience for both students and teachers alike. It not only strengthened their understanding of European culture and politics but also fostered wonderful new friendships and a true sense of belonging to a wider international community. ✨ ×

This special university celebration recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of elite incoming students across the country who secured 560 points or more in their Leaving Certificate exams. Aisling’s phenomenal results are a testament to her incredible work ethic, dedication, and passion for social sciences during her time here at Davitt College! 🇪🇺 European Youth Parliament • International Delegation Leaving Certificate Student Michael Fleming Selected for European Youth Parliament 23 October 2019 • Davitt College Castlebar Davitt College, Castlebar, extends its proudest congratulations to Leaving Certificate student Michael Fleming, who achieved the exceptional honor of being selected to represent Ireland at the international stage of the European Youth Parliament (EYP). Michael was one of just six young people chosen from across the entire country to form the Irish delegation. He travelled to Germany to participate in the prestigious 91st International Session of the European Youth Parliament, which took place in Hamburg. During the session, Michael and his fellow delegates collaborated with hundreds of peers from across Europe, engaging in intense committee work, debating pressing global issues, and drafting formal resolutions on European policy. This selection is a testament to Michael’s outstanding public speaking abilities, leadership skills, and keen interest in international affairs. 1916 Centenary Commemorations at Davitt College

🇮🇪 1916 Centenary • National Commemoration 1916 Centenary Commemorations at Davitt College 16 March 2016 • Davitt College Castlebar There was singing, poetry reading, striking works of art, and poignant recollections of the heroes who fought and died in events in Ireland 100 years ago. And there was much more. Davitt College embraced the centenary challenge with enthusiasm and creativity. Months of hard work from the 1916 Committee in Davitt College culminated in a unique and unforgettable day of remembrance and vision. The event started with wonderful music from the Davitt College Orchestra under the excellent direction of Music Teacher, Ms. Claire Kennedy. The Fifth Year History classes worked on writing biographies of the seven signatories of the Proclamation, whilst the Second Year Art classes created poignant sketches of the leaders. We were privileged to welcome Mr. Noel Campbell from The National Museum of Ireland in Turlough and author of “A History of Castlebar”, who spoke in detail about the 1916 events in Mayo and the effect they had on local communities. Ms. Bernie Rowland, Principal, spoke about the significance of the Proclamation and its influence on the new generation, as well as the vital importance of mutual respect in all aspects of life. The reading of the Proclamation by Leaving Certificate student Thomas Mongey was then followed by the solemn raising of the flag by Fifth Year students Michael Graven and Eoin O’Doherty. It really was a most special and memorable day for the entire school community. 🇮🇪📜🎻 ×

Davitt College Selected to Pioneer New ‘Politics and Society’ Subject

🏛️ Curriculum Innovation • Leaving Certificate 2016 Davitt College Selected to Pioneer New ‘Politics and Society’ Subject 8 March 2016 • National Curriculum Launch A brand new subject has been developed for the Leaving Certificate programme called Politics and Society, and we are incredibly proud to announce that Davitt College has been selected as one of a small number of schools nationally to introduce it on a phased basis! Starting this coming September 2016, this optional subject will be available to our senior students, with the very first Leaving Certificate Politics and Society examinations set to take place in June 2018. “We are delighted that our school has been selected to introduce Leaving Certificate Politics and Society from this coming September. Politics and Society is a very exciting and rewarding subject that will suit any student who is interested in human rights, equality, diversity, sustainable development, power, and democratic decision-making.” — Ms. Bernie Rowland, Principal Studying this subject will give students a real, practical insight into people, power, and how society functions. It will be assessed at both Ordinary and Higher Levels, featuring two core components: a written examination accounting for 80% of the final grade, and a hands-on citizenship project accounting for 20%. This project will allow students to research a topic they are passionate about and apply their learning in action. “The introduction of Politics and Society in Davitt College complements the already very wide range of subjects we offer to students in the Leaving Certificate Programme.
