End of the 75-Year Wait: Mayo’s Historic All-Ireland Triumph Celebrated at Davitt College

🏆 Historic Sporting Achievement End of the 75-Year Wait: Mayo’s Historic Triumph 27 July 2026 Mayo are waking up as All-Ireland senior football champions for the first time in 75 years following a stirring second-half comeback to defeat Kerry 1-20 to 1-17 in yesterday’s final at Croke Park. A crucial goal from Darragh Beirne right after the restart shifted the momentum, helping Mayo weather a late surge from the Kingdom and bring Sam Maguire home to the west. Here in Castlebar, the historic triumph carries an extra-special significance for Davitt College. Our school community is bursting with pride seeing Davitt alumni Diarmuid O’Connor take centre stage in the celebrations. The excitement hits even closer to home with Colm Lynch – who just finished up at Davitt College last year and serves as the Mayo U20 captain – joining the senior squad in the thick of the historic celebrations. Adding to the wonderful family and school connection, Colm’s mother, our very own teacher Ms Siobhán Lynch, shared in the unforgettable magic alongside Colm and the cup. From the corridors of Davitt College to the hallowed turf of Croke Park, this is a summer none of us will ever forget. Congratulations to Diarmuid, Colm, management, the entire panel, and the Lynch family. Up Mayo! An historic day for Mayo and an incredibly proud moment for the Davitt College community.

📱 School Management • Platform Update Transition to Tyro: Our New School Management App 11 May 2026 As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing communication and streamlining school administration, Davitt College is excited to announce our transition to Tyro, a next-generation school management information system (MIS). We successfully migrated from VSware in late May 2026. This foundational step was carried out in preparation for a full, comprehensive school release moving into the upcoming academic year, ensuring our entire community benefits from a more modern, efficient platform. What This Means for Parents and Guardians Detailed informational notices and setup instructions have been sent out to parents and guardians. The Tyro platform brings attendance tracking, assessment insights, and school communications together into one seamless digital experience. Access Your Portal Parents can access the portal directly to check notices, student progress, and attendance updates. 🕊️ UN Peacekeeping & History Jadotville Veterans Deliver United Nations Briefing 21 April 2026 Politics & Society Students Welcome Historic UN Peacekeepers Our Fifth and Sixth Year Politics and Society students had the extraordinary privilege of welcoming historic veteran Captain Noel Carey and his son, Colonel Paul Carey, to the social science lab. Captain Carey, one of the heroic figures who fought in the famous Siege of Jadotville during the 1961 United Nations mission in the Congo, delivered a deeply moving and powerful first-hand account of his experiences. He detailed the strategic decisions, human rights challenges, and immense resilience shown by A Company 35th Irish Battalion under siege. Following this historical perspective, Colonel Paul Carey provided an excellent, modern briefing on his own senior leadership roles within active UN peacekeeping operations. His talk gave students a direct look into how international treaties, conflict resolution strategies, and Ireland’s continuous contribution to global peace and security operate on the ground today. This was an inspiring, unforgettable opportunity for our classes to see textbook themes in global politics come to life through real-world defenders of human rights!

🎵 Creative Arts & Politics • Transition Year Workshop ATU Sligo Politics Chair Dr Eamonn Furey Sparking Creative Songwriting Action with TY Teams! 23 February 2026 Our Transition Year spaces were absolutely buzzing with energy this week as we welcomed the brilliant Dr Eamonn Furey, Programme Chair of Sociology and Politics at ATU Sligo, to lead a fantastic, high-octane creative arts workshop! 🌟 As a proud Creative School, we love pushing the boundaries of traditional learning. Dr Furey guided our students through a fascinating deep-dive into music as a political art form, tracking how iconic tracks, rhythms, and poetry have historically been used to champion human rights, challenge systemic inequalities, and give a powerful voice to local communities on the global stage. Inspired by these legendary protest anthems, our students stepped up to the microphone themselves! Working in collaborative production teams, they brainstormed, drafted, and boldly performed their own original political lyrics—tackling modern global issues with incredible maturity, sharp wit, and rhythm. It was an invigorating showcase of musical creativity, confidence, and raw talent. Huge thanks to Dr Furey for inspiring our next generation of creative changemakers! 👏 ×

Fifty Senior Graphics Students Awarded University Level 6 Certificates in 21st Century STEM Skills

🎓 Academic Excellence • STEM & University Certification Fifty Senior Graphics Students Awarded University Level 6 Certificates in 21st Century STEM Skills 5 November 2024 The entire Davitt College community is incredibly proud of fifty of our Senior students who were officially awarded their Certificate in 21st Century STEM Skills from the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Sligo. Our students successfully completed three intensive “STEM Passport for Inclusion” workshops facilitated by industry experts and academic mentors during their Transition Year cycle. Having submitted their high-level technical assignments, they have now officially qualified with an NFQ Level 6 Certificate in STEM Skills, fully recognised by the National Framework of Qualifications. Pioneering STEM Inclusion & Industry Pathways This national initiative, led by Dr Katriona O’Sullivan at Maynooth University and jointly backed by Microsoft Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland, directly addresses gender inequalities in technical fields. By combining a formal university qualification with structured mentoring from industry role models, the programme provides an elite pathway for students to progress to third-level education and secure high-value STEM qualifications. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to Mr David Nevin (TY Co-ordinator) and our Career Guidance Department for supporting and encouraging our engineering and graphics students on this prestigious academic journey. The prestigious awards ceremony took place at the University of Limerick, where the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, T.D., was present alongside the sponsor of the scholarship scheme, Mr. J.P. McManus. The distinguished Guest of Honour for the event was Ryanair Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Michael O’Leary. 125 National Recipients Selected across the 32 counties of Ireland €32M Philanthropic Fund Funded entirely by sponsor J.P. McManus 1,300+ Total Beneficiaries Supporting students throughout third-level 🎓 National Recognition for Academic Excellence Now in its sixth year, the highly competitive scheme provides vital financial assistance to top-tier, high-achieving students who completed their Leaving Certificate or A-Level examinations in 2013. The prestigious awards are strictly administered by the Department of Education and Skills in the Republic of Ireland and the Department of Education in Northern Ireland, ensuring that only the highest academic benchmarks across both jurisdictions are recognized.
