🌸 Religious Education • International Women’s Day 2026 International Women’s Day: Pausing to Reflect and Celebrate 9 March 2026 To mark International Women’s Day, our students took part in a series of thoughtful and creative workshops during their Religious Education classes to celebrate the immense impact women have on our lives and global society every day. Moving beyond historical theory, students spent time reflecting deeply on the specific women who inspire them. This led to a highly engaging workshop where classes designed custom posters celebrating remarkable female figures from past and present, alongside the vital women in their own personal lives—including mothers, grandmothers, teachers, and mentors. It provided a wonderful, relaxed opportunity for our young people to pause, reflect, and show genuine appreciation for the positive leadership and care that surrounds them daily. ×

🕯️ Community Leadership • Mayo University Hospital Service of Remembrance Mayo University Hospital Service of Remembrance: Proud of Our Student Leaders 2 March 2026 The entire Davitt College community extends its heartfelt appreciation and pride to Conor, Isabella, Sarah, Danielle, and Isabelle, who represented our school at the Mayo University Hospital Service of Remembrance on Friday evening. The service provides a vital space of solace for parents and families experiencing bereavement through pregnancy loss or the tragic death of a child. Our five student representatives stepped into this sensitive civic role with immense emotional maturity. By leading with quiet grace and deep compassion, they beautifully exemplified the core values of our department, supporting our wider community during their moments of greatest need. ×

🎵 Creative Arts & Politics • Transition Year Workshop ATU Sligo Politics Chair Dr Eamonn Furey Sparking Creative Songwriting Action with TY Teams! 23 February 2026 Our Transition Year spaces were absolutely buzzing with energy this week as we welcomed the brilliant Dr Eamonn Furey, Programme Chair of Sociology and Politics at ATU Sligo, to lead a fantastic, high-octane creative arts workshop! 🌟 As a proud Creative School, we love pushing the boundaries of traditional learning. Dr Furey guided our students through a fascinating deep-dive into music as a political art form, tracking how iconic tracks, rhythms, and poetry have historically been used to champion human rights, challenge systemic inequalities, and give a powerful voice to local communities on the global stage. Inspired by these legendary protest anthems, our students stepped up to the microphone themselves! Working in collaborative production teams, they brainstormed, drafted, and boldly performed their own original political lyrics—tackling modern global issues with incredible maturity, sharp wit, and rhythm. It was an invigorating showcase of musical creativity, confidence, and raw talent. Huge thanks to Dr Furey for inspiring our next generation of creative changemakers! 👏 ×

The Business and Economics Department was absolutely delighted to welcome our French colleagues to our campus for a collaborative, two-day job shadowing experience, marking another fantastic milestone in our school’s international engagement. As globally focused secondary schools, both Davitt College and the Lycée Général Saint Odile are incredibly proud to hold official Erasmus+ accreditation. Building vibrant European partnerships is a key objective here at Davitt College, serving as a core pillar to ensure the long-term growth and success of our Erasmus+ programme. By sharing pedagogical practices across international borders, this innovative cross-curricular initiative has laid the groundwork for a partnership that we firmly hope will continue to develop and prosper for years to come. 🤖 STEM & Robotics • ATU Galway Competition Davitt College Code and Drive at the VEX IQ Robotics Competition! 13 January 2026 Five brilliant first-year students from our Robotics & Coding Club proudly represented Davitt College at the VEX IQ Robotics Competition in ATU Galway today! It was an action-packed day filled with competitive coding, precision driving, and intense real-time problem-solving, where our students showcased outstanding teamwork and engineering skills on the big stage. The dedication, focus, and technical adaptability displayed by our junior team throughout the event were highly commended by the regional judges. Building the Future of Technology Activities like VEX IQ bridge classroom theory with hands-on mechanical and computational challenges, encouraging our first-years to tackle complex logic under pressure. The future of STEM at Davitt College is looking very bright indeed! A huge well done to all our first-year competitors. ×

💛 Community Wellbeing • World Mental Health Day Celebrating World Mental Health Day in the Community 10 October 2026 To mark World Mental Health Day, a group of our wonderful Davitt College students were absolutely delighted to be invited to a special community coffee morning! Hosted by the fantastic teams at the Mayo Mental Health Association and Mindspace Castlebar, the event took place in the welcoming and cozy surroundings of Brú Coffee Shop. ☕ It was a brilliant morning filled with warm drinks, great conversations, and most importantly, invaluable learning. Tying in perfectly with our SPHE modules on emotional wellbeing, our students gathered a wealth of practical information regarding the vital mental health supports and services available right here in County Mayo. 🧠🤝 Knowing how to access local support networks and breaking the stigma around mental health are huge parts of what we teach in the classroom, so bringing that learning out into the real world was truly inspiring. 🇪🇺 Erasmus+ • European Adventure Davitt College Students Embark on Erasmus Adventure in Brussels 8 October 2025 A group of 36 students and four teachers from Davitt College recently returned from a highly enriching Erasmus trip to Brussels, Belgium, where they immersed themselves in culture, education, and European institutions. 🌍 Broadening Horizons The four-day programme offered students a unique chance to broaden their horizons through both educational and cultural experiences. One of the major highlights of the trip was a visit to an international school, where students were able to observe classes and engage directly with their European peers. Our teachers also had the fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with their international colleagues, gaining fresh perspectives on global education. 🏛️ Exploring Cultural Treasures The group thoroughly explored Belgium’s cultural treasures. A guided city tour of Brussels introduced the students to the vibrant heart of Europe, taking in everything from its historic squares to its striking modern institutions. They also enjoyed a beautiful day trip to Bruges, discovering the medieval charm of the canals, cobblestone streets, and the rich heritage of the UNESCO World Heritage city. 🇪🇺 The European Parliament A central part of the Erasmus experience was a visit to the European Parliament. Students were given an in-depth tour of the Parliament buildings, learning exactly how European democracy functions in practice. The visit was made even more memorable by a special meeting with Mr. Olaf Gill, who generously shared his expertise on European institutions and communication. His insights truly inspired the group to think more deeply about the importance of international cooperation and active citizenship. This Erasmus trip proved to be an unforgettable experience for both students and teachers alike. It not only strengthened their understanding of European culture and politics but also fostered wonderful new friendships and a true sense of belonging to a wider international community. ✨ ×

🎓 Transition Year • Awards & Graduation A Milestone Year: Davitt College Celebrates Transition Year Graduation and Achievements 2025 26 May 2025 On Monday 26th May 2025, Davitt College hosted its annual Transition Year Awards Event, celebrating a year defined by personal growth, community engagement, and holistic development. Students were commended for their active involvement throughout the 2024–2025 academic year across academic modules, sports, and school life. The TY program at Davitt College continues to provide a flexible environment where students build self-confidence, develop core academic competencies, and foster key life skills such as critical thinking, social awareness, and entrepreneurship. A key highlight of this year’s ceremony was the celebration of Davitt College’s selection as a pilot school for a new Road Safety Module, delivered in association with the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The event featured inspiring addresses from RSA guest speakers Ms. Eilish McDonagh and Ms. Caroline McHale, who commended the students on their active citizenship and engagement with this vital initiative. The awards ceremony highlighted the depth of talent, teamwork, and leadership within the year group—qualities that will serve these students exceptionally well as they prepare to enter Senior Cycle.
