🤖 STEM & Robotics • ATU Galway Competition Davitt College Code and Drive at the VEX IQ Robotics Competition! 13 January 2026 Five brilliant first-year students from our Robotics & Coding Club proudly represented Davitt College at the VEX IQ Robotics Competition in ATU Galway today! It was an action-packed day filled with competitive coding, precision driving, and intense real-time problem-solving, where our students showcased outstanding teamwork and engineering skills on the big stage. The dedication, focus, and technical adaptability displayed by our junior team throughout the event were highly commended by the regional judges. Building the Future of Technology Activities like VEX IQ bridge classroom theory with hands-on mechanical and computational challenges, encouraging our first-years to tackle complex logic under pressure. The future of STEM at Davitt College is looking very bright indeed! A huge well done to all our first-year competitors. ×

💛 Community Wellbeing • World Mental Health Day Celebrating World Mental Health Day in the Community 10 October 2026 To mark World Mental Health Day, a group of our wonderful Davitt College students were absolutely delighted to be invited to a special community coffee morning! Hosted by the fantastic teams at the Mayo Mental Health Association and Mindspace Castlebar, the event took place in the welcoming and cozy surroundings of Brú Coffee Shop. ☕ It was a brilliant morning filled with warm drinks, great conversations, and most importantly, invaluable learning. Tying in perfectly with our SPHE modules on emotional wellbeing, our students gathered a wealth of practical information regarding the vital mental health supports and services available right here in County Mayo. 🧠🤝 Knowing how to access local support networks and breaking the stigma around mental health are huge parts of what we teach in the classroom, so bringing that learning out into the real world was truly inspiring. 🇪🇺 Erasmus+ • European Adventure Davitt College Students Embark on Erasmus Adventure in Brussels 8 October 2025 A group of 36 students and four teachers from Davitt College recently returned from a highly enriching Erasmus trip to Brussels, Belgium, where they immersed themselves in culture, education, and European institutions. 🌍 Broadening Horizons The four-day programme offered students a unique chance to broaden their horizons through both educational and cultural experiences. One of the major highlights of the trip was a visit to an international school, where students were able to observe classes and engage directly with their European peers. Our teachers also had the fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with their international colleagues, gaining fresh perspectives on global education. 🏛️ Exploring Cultural Treasures The group thoroughly explored Belgium’s cultural treasures. A guided city tour of Brussels introduced the students to the vibrant heart of Europe, taking in everything from its historic squares to its striking modern institutions. They also enjoyed a beautiful day trip to Bruges, discovering the medieval charm of the canals, cobblestone streets, and the rich heritage of the UNESCO World Heritage city. 🇪🇺 The European Parliament A central part of the Erasmus experience was a visit to the European Parliament. Students were given an in-depth tour of the Parliament buildings, learning exactly how European democracy functions in practice. The visit was made even more memorable by a special meeting with Mr. Olaf Gill, who generously shared his expertise on European institutions and communication. His insights truly inspired the group to think more deeply about the importance of international cooperation and active citizenship. This Erasmus trip proved to be an unforgettable experience for both students and teachers alike. It not only strengthened their understanding of European culture and politics but also fostered wonderful new friendships and a true sense of belonging to a wider international community. ✨ ×

🎓 Transition Year • Awards & Graduation A Milestone Year: Davitt College Celebrates Transition Year Graduation and Achievements 2025 26 May 2025 On Monday 26th May 2025, Davitt College hosted its annual Transition Year Awards Event, celebrating a year defined by personal growth, community engagement, and holistic development. Students were commended for their active involvement throughout the 2024–2025 academic year across academic modules, sports, and school life. The TY program at Davitt College continues to provide a flexible environment where students build self-confidence, develop core academic competencies, and foster key life skills such as critical thinking, social awareness, and entrepreneurship. A key highlight of this year’s ceremony was the celebration of Davitt College’s selection as a pilot school for a new Road Safety Module, delivered in association with the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The event featured inspiring addresses from RSA guest speakers Ms. Eilish McDonagh and Ms. Caroline McHale, who commended the students on their active citizenship and engagement with this vital initiative. The awards ceremony highlighted the depth of talent, teamwork, and leadership within the year group—qualities that will serve these students exceptionally well as they prepare to enter Senior Cycle. 🚲 Outdoor Education • Physical Wellbeing Outdoor Education: Cycling the Turlough Greenway 10 April 2025 Taking full advantage of the glorious sunshine, our First Year and Transition Year students recently took to the Turlough Greenway for a brilliant day out as part of our outdoor PE programme. Using our own fleet of Davitt College bicycles—perfectly timed for our National Bike Week activities—the students traded the sports hall for the open road. It was a fantastic way to build up some cardiovascular fitness while enjoying the fresh air and connecting with the beautiful local scenery. Of course, no proper Greenway excursion is complete without a well-deserved treat, and the day was brilliantly capped off with a stop for ice creams! A massive well done to everyone involved for bringing such great energy and making it such a fun, memorable trip. 🍦🚴‍♂️✨ ×

TY Volunteers Complete Fantastic FAI Primary 5s Season 8 April 2025 After months of incredible action, our students have officially wrapped up their time volunteering at the FAI Mayo Primary 5s competition at Umbro Park, Milebush. It has been an amazing few months on the sidelines and pitches for our Transition Years, who braved the elements, managed logistics, and refereed hundreds of games to support grassroots primary school football in the region. ⚽ On to the Connacht Finals A massive congratulations goes out to every single primary school that traveled to Milebush and competed with such great sporting spirit throughout the tournament stages. The standard of football this year was exceptional, and we want to wish the very best of luck to all the qualifying Mayo teams who have earned their spots and are now moving forward to represent the county in the upcoming Connacht Finals! 🤝 Proud of Our Leaders A huge thank you to our students for their dedication, reliability, and leadership over the last few months. Programs of this scale simply cannot run without community volunteer support, and our TYs represented the school brilliantly every single week. 🏃 Senior Cycle • Sports Science & LCPE LCPE: Movement Analysis & Injury Screening 6 March 2025 As part of their rigorous Leaving Certificate Physical Education (LCPE) studies, our 5th Year students regularly visit the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence. These dedicated sessions are designed to seamlessly bridge classroom theory with elite, real-world sports practice. Session Highlights: Professional Fitness Testing: Assessing baseline physical metrics using high-level sports science protocols. Movement Analysis: Evaluating biomechanics and technique to optimise sporting performance. Injury Screening: Identifying physiological risks and understanding preventative conditioning strategies. A sincere thank you to Daniel Forde (Connacht GAA Strength & Conditioning) and Oran Hester from Connacht GAA for their continued expert work and guidance with our LCPE groups. TY Leaders Shine at FAI Schools Primary 5s Regional Qualifiers

⚽ Youth Sport • TY Leadership & Officiating TY Leaders Shine at FAI Schools Primary 5s Regional Qualifiers 14 February 2025 Fourteen of our fantastic Transition Year students had a highly productive, busy, and thoroughly enjoyable week assisting at the FAI Mayo 5-a-side Primary Schools competition. It was another monumental week for the tournament, which saw over 750 energetic primary school students competing across the intense West and South Mayo Regional Qualifiers. Our TY students took a central role on the sidelines and pitches, ensuring matches ran smoothly, officiating fixtures, and supporting the young players throughout the days. 🤝 Community & Club Partnership A tournament of this massive scale succeeds entirely on collaboration, and a huge well-done goes to all the participating players, dedicated teachers, and schools who traveled to make the qualifiers so competitive. Special thanks are extended to the TY cohorts from Davitt College, Sacred Heart School, and Rice College for their brilliant leadership and peer support. We also want to give a massive shout-out to Westport United FC and the Mayo Football League for acting as superb, welcoming hosts and providing top-tier facilities for the games. 📅 What’s Next? The regional action isn’t slowing down! The tournament shifts focus immediately after the weekend, moving directly on to the East Mayo Regional Qualifiers, which kick off from Tuesday onward.
