🏆 FAI Schools Connacht Final • Division Two Glory 🏆 CONNACHT CHAMPIONS! First Year Girls Seal Provincial Glory in Milebush Thriller 22 May 2024 • Umbro Park, Milebush History was made at Umbro Park, Milebush yesterday as our First Year Division Two Girls’ Soccer team captured the Connacht Provincial Title after an unforgettable, heart-stopping penalty shootout victory over a formidable Gortnor Abbey side. From the first whistle to the absolute final kick, this match was a spectacular showcase of post-primary football. Both sides brought an incredible level of intensity, leaving everything on the pitch in front of a captivated crowd of travelling supporters, families, and friends. The Match: Drama from Start to Finish The game itself was a masterclass in determination. After a fierce, end-to-end battle during regular time, the scoreboard sat locked at a nail-biting 2-2 draw. With neither side willing to back down, the match pushed into extra time. The tension in Milebush was palpable. Both teams fought valiantly through tired legs, but with defenses holding rock-solid under immense pressure, the deadlock couldn’t be broken. It meant the ultimate test of soccer nerves and skill: a penalty shootout. ⚽ Elite Composure Under Pressure Amidst a wave of cheers and gasps from the sidelines, our girls showed world-class composure. Player after player stepped up with massive bravery. When the final winning penalty was expertly buried into the back of the net, it sparked pure, joyous celebration on the pitch and across the stands. Davitt College were Connacht Champions! A Word From the Coaches Coaches Ms. Kearns and Ms. Donoghue expressed just how immensely proud they are of this historic group of players: “ From the very beginning of the season, your skill and determination shone through. Each goal, tackle, and pass was a testament to the hard work and dedication you have put into training and previous games. The way you supported and encouraged each other, both on and off the field, exemplifies the true spirit of teamwork. You have made your school, your coaches, and yourselves very proud. — Ms. Kearns & Ms. Donoghue, Team Management Transition Year Leadership A massive share of credit for this provincial success goes to our outstanding Transition Year student mentors: Alannagh Keaveney, Caitlin Loftus, Katie Heaney, and Rachel Heneghan. These TY leaders have been an invaluable asset to the management team all season. From running structured training drills and organizing match-day warm-ups to providing crucial motivation, tactical advice, and positive energy from the dugout, the First Year squad and their coaches are incredibly grateful for their dedicated assistance. Thank You to the Davitt Community Finally, the team and coaches would like to extend a huge thank you to all the supporters, families, and friends who traveled to Milebush yesterday and cheered the girls on throughout the campaign. Your vocal encouragement all year has been our twelfth player on the pitch! Once again, a massive congratulations to our First Year Connacht Champions. The school was honoured to welcome Mayo GAA star Mr. Padraig O’Hora as Guest of Honour. After a series of tight knockout rounds, the grand final came right down to the wire, showcasing tremendous teamwork, athletic grit, and great sportsmanship from all involved. 📐 STEM & Careers • DCG Industry Pathways SDS Design Engineers Outline Civil and Structural Engineering Pathways for DCG Students 28 February 2024 We wish to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Brian Hope of SDS Design Engineers, who delivered a highly informative technical presentation to our Leaving Certificate Design & Communication Graphics (DCG) students this week. Mr Hope demonstrated how the exact geometric principles studied in class—specifically descriptive line coordinates, plane intersections, and geologic map contours—are applied directly to map out major national infrastructure projects. He also briefed our classes on the exciting structural engineering apprenticeship pathways available through ATU Sligo, showing how spatial reasoning on the drawing board translates straight into a professional career. 🏀 Post-Primary Basketball • First Year Development Freshmen Flash: 22 First-Year Boys Represent Davitt in Crossmolina 28 February 2024 The future of Davitt College basketball looks incredibly bright as a massive squad of 22 First-Year boys travelled to Crossmolina to compete for the school club. For many of these young players, it was a fantastic opportunity to pull on the jersey and get their first real taste of competitive high-tempo post-primary action. Valiant Effort Against Strong Opposition While the scoreboard ultimately went in favour of a clinical and physically strong Crossmolina side on this occasion, the Davitt boys showed fantastic team integration and fighting spirit until the final buzzer. The game served as a brilliant learning curve for the developing squad as they adjust to the pace and structure of the competitive regional league. A massive well done to all 22 players who travelled and gave it their all on the hardwood—the experience gained today will undoubtedly stand to this group as they continue their technical development throughout the season! 🏀🔴🟢👏 ×

🕯️ Community Care • Transition Year Service Dignity and Compassion: Transition Year Students Support ATU Remembrance Service 26 February 2024 A group of our Transition Year students recently participated in a deeply poignant Remembrance Service held at ATU Castlebar. The annual ecumenical service was organised to offer comfort, solidarity, and support to local families who have experienced the devastating loss of a baby or a child. Representing the Davitt College community with exemplary maturity, our students took an active role in the candle ceremony and distributed custom prayer cards thoughtfully created by class 4A. Participating in an occasion of such profound local significance is an immense privilege, and our students are to be commended for the extraordinary dignity, empathy, and respect they demonstrated throughout the evening. 🕯️🕊️🤍 ×

⚽ FAI Schools • Transition Year Sports Leadership TY Students Lead the Way at FAI Schools Primary 5s Section Qualifiers 9 February 2024 • Umbro Park, Milebush Our Transition Year students were back in action this week, showcasing outstanding leadership, coordination, and sporting spirit at the FAI Schools Primary 5s Central Section Qualifiers. The tournament kicked off with immense energy at Umbro Park, Milebush, as over 30 primary school teams arrived in Castlebar for two brilliant days of fast-paced, high-scoring action. Davitt College once again took a central role in making the event a massive success, with our TY coordinators managing pitch logistics, refereeing high-intensity fixtures, and keeping the tournament running like clockwork. ❄️ Weather Update & Upcoming Fixtures While the opening days delivered fantastic football, the elements ultimately had the final say later in the week. Thursday and Friday’s scheduled qualifiers unfortunately fell foul of the unseasonal snow and will be rescheduled for a later date. The tournament will briefly pause for the mid-term break, but the action resumes immediately afterwards as the blitzes head out to the West and East section qualifiers. 🤝 Outstanding Leadership from Davitt College Organisers extended a huge thank you to Davitt College and our incredible TY students for their brilliant, unwavering support again this year. Stepping up to mentor younger players, officiate matches fairly, and represent our school community so professionally on a regional stage is a credit to everyone involved. ⚙️ STEM & Technology • Junior Cycle Engineering Precision Workshop Fabrication: Junior Cycle Phone Stands & Festive Projects 30 January 2024 Our second-year engineering classes have been working with fantastic focus in the metalwork labs, turning raw technical drawings into beautifully finished physical products. As part of the Junior Cycle Engineering specification, students have been developing essential metal-processing, drilling, and surface-finishing skills. Their practical portfolios include custom-fabricated steel and acrylic phone stands, alongside precision-engineered brass and aluminium Christmas decorations. These projects display fantastic manual dexterity, an excellent grasp of mechanical dimensioning, and a patient, resilient approach to workshop craft. Well done to all our junior engineers! ⚙️📐🛠️✨ ×

🏀 Post-Primary Basketball • Junior Girls League Fresh Campaign Begins: First and Second-Year Girls Launch League Run 26 January 2024 Well done to our First and Second-Year Girls Basketball teams who stepped onto the hardwood today to play their very first league match of the season. The fixtures marked the highly anticipated opening of the Phase 2 calendar, with a brilliant turnout of younger players eager to represent the school. Narrow Defeats but Promising Performances Both squads faced tough opposition for their season openers. While the results ultimately went against them by the narrowest of margins at the final buzzer, the girls put in fantastic, high-energy performances across both games. The matches provided invaluable competitive experience for the developing panels, showcasing great teamwork and defensive work ethic that will undoubtedly stand to them as the league progresses.
