🏸 Regional Badminton Success 4th Year Boys Crowned Division C Badminton Champions 29 April 2026 Dominant Court Displays Secure Regional Title A phenomenal day on the courts for our boys’ badminton squads as they traveled to Ballina to compete in the highly competitive Division C tournament. The standard of play was exceptionally high, but our panels rose to the challenge with fantastic grit and sharp tactical focus. A massive congratulations to our standout 4th Year boys’ team, who put on a clinical performance to be officially crowned Division C Winners—an incredible achievement for the school’s racket sports program! The entire school community is immensely proud of all our students for the immense work ethic, technical execution, and excellent sportsmanship they displayed throughout the entire tournament. Huge praise goes out to every player involved and to the mentors who guided them to regional success while representing Davitt College with total pride.

🕊️ UN Peacekeeping & History Jadotville Veterans Deliver United Nations Briefing 21 April 2026 Politics & Society Students Welcome Historic UN Peacekeepers Our Fifth and Sixth Year Politics and Society students had the extraordinary privilege of welcoming historic veteran Captain Noel Carey and his son, Colonel Paul Carey, to the social science lab. Captain Carey, one of the heroic figures who fought in the famous Siege of Jadotville during the 1961 United Nations mission in the Congo, delivered a deeply moving and powerful first-hand account of his experiences. He detailed the strategic decisions, human rights challenges, and immense resilience shown by A Company 35th Irish Battalion under siege. Following this historical perspective, Colonel Paul Carey provided an excellent, modern briefing on his own senior leadership roles within active UN peacekeeping operations. His talk gave students a direct look into how international treaties, conflict resolution strategies, and Ireland’s continuous contribution to global peace and security operate on the ground today. This was an inspiring, unforgettable opportunity for our classes to see textbook themes in global politics come to life through real-world defenders of human rights!

🇫🇷 Cultural Excursion Transition Year Students Immerse Themselves in French Cinema at the Linenhall 18 March 2026 Learning Comes to Life Through Culture Today, our Transition Year French students headed out for a brilliant, action-packed cultural excursion to the Linenhall Arts Centre to experience the acclaimed French feature film “En Fanfare.” It was a fantastic opportunity to step outside the traditional classroom and dive straight into authentic dialogue, native accents, and captivating francophone storytelling. Seeing language skills jump straight off the textbook pages and into real-world art made for an unforgettable cinema trip! A huge well done to all the students and staff involved for diving into the experience with such enthusiasm—proving once again that language learning truly comes alive through culture.

They met face-to-face with our fantastic Transition Year SVP team, the driving force behind three major community initiatives this term: the Beanie Winter Appeal, the Christmas Food Appeal, and our recent Bake Sale. Local Impact Direct Support for Local Families During her visit, Helen spoke with students about the vital day-to-day work SVP carries out, detailing exactly how these funds provide direct, essential support right here in our local community. Moving beyond historical theory, students spent time reflecting deeply on the specific women who inspire them. This led to a highly engaging workshop where classes designed custom posters celebrating remarkable female figures from past and present, alongside the vital women in their own personal lives—including mothers, grandmothers, teachers, and mentors. It provided a wonderful, relaxed opportunity for our young people to pause, reflect, and show genuine appreciation for the positive leadership and care that surrounds them daily. ×

🎵 Creative Arts & Politics • Transition Year Workshop ATU Sligo Politics Chair Dr Eamonn Furey Sparking Creative Songwriting Action with TY Teams! 23 February 2026 Our Transition Year spaces were absolutely buzzing with energy this week as we welcomed the brilliant Dr Eamonn Furey, Programme Chair of Sociology and Politics at ATU Sligo, to lead a fantastic, high-octane creative arts workshop! 🌟 As a proud Creative School, we love pushing the boundaries of traditional learning. Dr Furey guided our students through a fascinating deep-dive into music as a political art form, tracking how iconic tracks, rhythms, and poetry have historically been used to champion human rights, challenge systemic inequalities, and give a powerful voice to local communities on the global stage. Inspired by these legendary protest anthems, our students stepped up to the microphone themselves! Working in collaborative production teams, they brainstormed, drafted, and boldly performed their own original political lyrics—tackling modern global issues with incredible maturity, sharp wit, and rhythm. It was an invigorating showcase of musical creativity, confidence, and raw talent. Huge thanks to Dr Furey for inspiring our next generation of creative changemakers! 👏 ×

🏐 1st Year GAA • Castlebar Mitchels Blitz 1st Year GAA Blitz: Fantastic Day of Football at Castlebar Mitchels Astro 27 January 2026 Last Tuesday, our newest players took to the field for a brilliant day of action as we hosted a 1st Year GAA 11-a-side Blitz on the fantastic astro pitches at Castlebar Mitchels GAA. The tournament brought together a highly competitive mix of talent, with six secondary schools participating in the event: ✅ Davitt College ✅ St. Patrick’s College, Foxford ✅ Scoil Muire agus Pádraig, Swinford ✅ Coláiste Muire, Tourmakeady ✅ Gairmscoil Chormaic, Lacken Cross ✅ Coláiste Pobail Acla, Achill The focus of the blitz was entirely on player development, skill refinement, and game time, ensuring plenty of high-quality football was played by everyone who toggled out. Special Thanks We would like to extend a huge thank you to Martin Costello, Mayo GAA Games Development Officer (GDO), for his invaluable help in coordinating and running the fixtures throughout the day. Finally, a massive thank you to all the visiting players, teachers, and schools who traveled to compete and made the blitz such an overwhelming success.
