📐 STEM & Careers • DCG Industry Pathways SDS Design Engineers Outline Civil and Structural Engineering Pathways for DCG Students 28 February 2024 We wish to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Brian Hope of SDS Design Engineers, who delivered a highly informative technical presentation to our Leaving Certificate Design & Communication Graphics (DCG) students this week. Mr Hope demonstrated how the exact geometric principles studied in class—specifically descriptive line coordinates, plane intersections, and geologic map contours—are applied directly to map out major national infrastructure projects. He also briefed our classes on the exciting structural engineering apprenticeship pathways available through ATU Sligo, showing how spatial reasoning on the drawing board translates straight into a professional career. 🕯️ Community Care • Transition Year Service Dignity and Compassion: Transition Year Students Support ATU Remembrance Service 26 February 2024 A group of our Transition Year students recently participated in a deeply poignant Remembrance Service held at ATU Castlebar. The annual ecumenical service was organised to offer comfort, solidarity, and support to local families who have experienced the devastating loss of a baby or a child. Representing the Davitt College community with exemplary maturity, our students took an active role in the candle ceremony and distributed custom prayer cards thoughtfully created by class 4A. Participating in an occasion of such profound local significance is an immense privilege, and our students are to be commended for the extraordinary dignity, empathy, and respect they demonstrated throughout the evening. 🕯️🕊️🤍 ×

🏃 Athletics Ireland • Connacht Schools Cross Country Finals Elite Form: Niamh Moran Shines at Connacht Finals in Loughrea 22 February 2024 • Bushfield, Loughrea The 2024 cross country season has officially hit its peak flight, and our distance athletes have once again proven themselves against the very best in the West. Following a superb collective outing at the regional qualifiers in Ballymote on January 30th—where the entire school panel put in a fantastic shift—our qualifying athletes travelled to Bushfield in Loughrea yesterday for a highly anticipated Connacht Schools Cross Country Finals. Running Up a Grade: An Outstanding Top-10 Finish The standout performance of the championship came from the exceptionally talented Niamh Moran. Representing Davitt College and competing alongside her clubmates at Castlebar AC, Niamh faced an immense athletic challenge by running out of her age grade to test herself against an older, highly experienced field. ⏱️ 8th Place in Connacht Showing mature tactical pacing, incredible lung capacity, and absolute grit on the heavy Bushfield turf, Niamh delivered an unbelievable race to cross the line inside the top 10. 🚀 Running Out of Grade Stepping up in both distance and competition level against an older field, this top-10 provincial result is a massive statement of her elite dedication and growth. A Credit to the School The endurance and physical toughness required to compete at this level are immense. The entire sports department and school community at Davitt College extend our huge congratulations to Niamh on a fantastic race, and well done to everyone who took part across the entire winter campaign. ⚽ FAI Schools • Transition Year Sports Leadership TY Students Lead the Way at FAI Schools Primary 5s Section Qualifiers 9 February 2024 • Umbro Park, Milebush Our Transition Year students were back in action this week, showcasing outstanding leadership, coordination, and sporting spirit at the FAI Schools Primary 5s Central Section Qualifiers. The tournament kicked off with immense energy at Umbro Park, Milebush, as over 30 primary school teams arrived in Castlebar for two brilliant days of fast-paced, high-scoring action. Davitt College once again took a central role in making the event a massive success, with our TY coordinators managing pitch logistics, refereeing high-intensity fixtures, and keeping the tournament running like clockwork. ❄️ Weather Update & Upcoming Fixtures While the opening days delivered fantastic football, the elements ultimately had the final say later in the week. Thursday and Friday’s scheduled qualifiers unfortunately fell foul of the unseasonal snow and will be rescheduled for a later date. The tournament will briefly pause for the mid-term break, but the action resumes immediately afterwards as the blitzes head out to the West and East section qualifiers. 🤝 Outstanding Leadership from Davitt College Organisers extended a huge thank you to Davitt College and our incredible TY students for their brilliant, unwavering support again this year. Stepping up to mentor younger players, officiate matches fairly, and represent our school community so professionally on a regional stage is a credit to everyone involved. ⚙️ STEM & Technology • Junior Cycle Engineering Precision Workshop Fabrication: Junior Cycle Phone Stands & Festive Projects 30 January 2024 Our second-year engineering classes have been working with fantastic focus in the metalwork labs, turning raw technical drawings into beautifully finished physical products. As part of the Junior Cycle Engineering specification, students have been developing essential metal-processing, drilling, and surface-finishing skills. Their practical portfolios include custom-fabricated steel and acrylic phone stands, alongside precision-engineered brass and aluminium Christmas decorations. These projects display fantastic manual dexterity, an excellent grasp of mechanical dimensioning, and a patient, resilient approach to workshop craft. Well done to all our junior engineers! ⚙️📐🛠️✨ ×

🏀 Post-Primary Basketball • Junior Girls League Fresh Campaign Begins: First and Second-Year Girls Launch League Run 26 January 2024 Well done to our First and Second-Year Girls Basketball teams who stepped onto the hardwood today to play their very first league match of the season. The fixtures marked the highly anticipated opening of the Phase 2 calendar, with a brilliant turnout of younger players eager to represent the school. Narrow Defeats but Promising Performances Both squads faced tough opposition for their season openers. While the results ultimately went against them by the narrowest of margins at the final buzzer, the girls put in fantastic, high-energy performances across both games. The matches provided invaluable competitive experience for the developing panels, showcasing great teamwork and defensive work ethic that will undoubtedly stand to them as the league progresses. 🏛️ Junior Cycle CSPE • Guest Speaker Series Welcoming Alan Dillon TD to Class 2E! 10 November 2023 A massive well done to Danann Mekitarian and Conor McHale for organising a fantastic guest speaker session! As part of their C.S.P.E. Classroom-Based Assessment (CBA), the boys invited Alan Dillon TD to speak directly with their class, 2E. It was an engaging and highly informative morning. Our students were truly exemplary ambassadors for the school, posing insightful questions on a wide range of civic and community topics—covering everything from speed cameras and vaping legislation to local GAA developments across Mayo! The fixtures marked a highly anticipated milestone, signalling a fantastic, energetic revival of girls’ basketball within the school community. U16 Squad Grinds Out Win as U19s Show True Grit The U16 squad stole the headlines on the day, putting in a clinical performance to come away with an excellent opening-day victory. Meanwhile, the U19 panel fought valiantly in their season opener, laying down a strong foundational performance for the campaign ahead. A massive well done to all the players and management involved—seeing the girls’ game thriving back on the court is a brilliant boost for our sporting culture! 🏀🔴🟢✨👏 ×
