🏆 Annual School Event • Awards Ceremony 2016 Davitt College Annual Awards Ceremony 2016 24 May 2016 • Davitt College Castlebar The atmosphere at Davitt College was filled with immense pride and community spirit as the school hosted its Annual Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 24th May 2016. The event served as a wonderful showcase of the incredible hard work, talent, creativity, and commitment demonstrated by students across all disciplines. Over 100 students received awards ranging from academic achievements and stellar attendance records to accomplishments in sports, music, and extra-curricular activities. This was a particularly successful year for students who achieved local, regional, and All-Ireland honours. Adding a special touch of inspiration to the celebrations, the school welcomed special Guests of Honour Mr. Diarmuid O’Connor and Mr. Liam Irwin—both former students of Davitt College. Diarmuid was a player on the All-Ireland Mayo Minor Winning Team 2013, the All-Ireland U21 GAA Football Team, part of the All-Ireland winning title team in 2016, and named Young Footballer of the Year 2015. “These awards are a stepping stone to greater achievements in the future. Davitt College Students Sweep the Boards at National SciFest Competition

🔬 SciFest 2016 • National STEM Achievement Davitt College Students Sweep the Boards at National SciFest Competition 11 May 2016 • Sligo Institute of Technology It was an outstanding day for the students of Davitt College at this year’s SciFest Competition, held at the Sligo Institute of Technology on Wednesday, 11th May 2016. The school had eight projects entered and took home an incredible five Major Awards on the day, including a Special Award. The students were expertly mentored by Davitt College Science Teachers, Ms. Fiona O’Connor and Mr. Aaron Tonry. The aim of SciFest is to encourage a love of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) through active, collaborative, inquiry-based learning, providing a forum for students at local, regional, and national levels to present their scientific investigations. The initiative is funded by the Science Foundation Ireland Discover Programme, Intel Ireland, and Boston Scientific. Transition Year students Aoife Parsons and Clodagh Hegarty attracted much attention from the judges, winning the Intermediate Life Sciences Category and taking the Overall Runners-Up spot (sponsored by Abbott Ireland) with their project, “The Education and Promotion of Breastfeeding for Children, Adolescents and Adults”. The girls will now progress to compete for the SciFest 2016 Grand Award. Transition Year student Andrey Connolly won the coveted Boston Scientific Medical Devices Award for his project, “The Investigation and Research of Changeable Factors that Decrease the Chances of Survival of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Patients”. He was also named Runner-Up in the Intermediate Life Sciences Category. Andrey will now go on to compete for the Boston Scientific International Prize later in the year. Second Year students Therese Gallagher and Jane Ryder took First Place in the Junior Technology Category for their project, “The Blind’s Eye”. Their innovative project consisted of a walking stick with a motion sensor attached, which sends a vibrating pulse to the thumb of the user when it comes close to an obstacle. Congratulations to all the students involved—the future looks very bright indeed with such clever and creative young people representing the school! 🔬🏆🌟 Congratulations to Davitt College students Andrey Connolly, Jane Ryder, Therese Gallagher, Clodagh Hegarty, and Aoife Parsons, who were highly successful at the 2016 SciFest Competition held in Sligo Institute of Technology. ×

🤖 National Robotics • STEM Excellence 2015 Shane Gavin Secures “Best Individual Robot” National Title in Galway 3 November 2015 • Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway Huge congratulations to Davitt College Fifth Year Engineering student Shane Gavin on winning the prestigious “Best Individual Robot” title at the national EA Games Robotics Competition held in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway. Supported by EA Games, this high-octane championship pits rival robots from secondary schools across the country against one another to battle it out for coveted national trophies. This year’s edition saw over 450 second-level students competing. 🎓 Junior Certificate • Academic Excellence 2015 Academic Excellence: Celebration and Success for Davitt College Students 11 September 2015 • Results Day 2015 There were screams of excitement and pure delight across the campus on Wednesday, 9th September 2015, as Davitt College students gathered to receive their highly anticipated Junior Certificate examination results. The results across the year group were absolutely excellent, with the vast majority of our hard-working students achieving top honours across all subjects, reflecting the high standard of academic dedication at the school. 🌟 Pride in Hard Work and Dedication Davitt College Principal, Ms. Bernie Rowland, was visibly thrilled as she congratulated the students on their landmark achievements: “I am delighted with all of our students’ excellent results in the Junior Certificate. Our students worked very hard throughout the three years leading up to the Junior Certificate Examination and today they reap the rewards of that hard work. It is a wonderful day and we are very proud of each and every one of them. 🏆 Literary Achievement • National Winner Davitt College Celebrates All-Ireland Literary Winner Emily Nolan 13 August 2014 • Davitt College, Castlebar Davitt College, Castlebar, is absolutely thrilled to celebrate a landmark national achievement in creative writing. Emily Nolan, an exceptionally talented Fifth Year student, has been officially announced as the All-Ireland Winner of the Senior Category in the prestigious John West Fantasy Writing Competition 2014. Emily’s creative flair and narrative mastery outshone entries from across the country to secure the top spot in this highly competitive national tournament. To mark the momentous occasion, An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, TD, visited Davitt College recently. During his visit, the Taoiseach was delighted to meet with the young author and was presented with a personal copy of Emily’s winning short story, titled “Run for your Money”. 🎓 Academic Excellence • NUI Galway Awards National Recognition: Davitt College Students Honoured by NUI Galway for Elite Business Marks 26 February 2014 Davitt College, Castlebar, proudly celebrated further academic excellence as a group of top-performing young women were officially recognized by NUI Galway for their outstanding performance in the Junior Certificate state examinations. The students received prestigious certificates of achievement from the university’s J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics, an accolade reserved only for candidates who secured top-tier elite marks in higher level Business Studies across the country. This national recognition highlights the high caliber of academic dedication at the school, as well as the strength of our Business Studies department in fostering financial literacy, enterprise skills, and analytical thinking. Davitt College Students Honoured for Junior Certificate Business Excellence

Davitt College, Castlebar, celebrated further academic success as a group of top-performing students were presented with certificates of achievement from NUI Galway, recognizing their exceptional Junior Certificate results. The students recorded a Grade A in their Higher Level Business Studies Examination, placing them among an elite group of just 250 students from throughout Connacht to receive this prestigious regional honor. The presentations, held in association with the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland (BSTAI), were made at a special ceremony on the university campus, which was proudly attended by invited parents and school faculty. Transition Year Student Maria Named All-Ireland Home-Cook Hero Finalist

🧑‍🍳 Culinary Arts • National Finalist Transition Year Student Maria Named All-Ireland Home-Cook Hero Finalist 20 November 2013 • Davitt College Castlebar Davitt College, Castlebar, extends its massive congratulations to Transition Year student Maria, who achieved national recognition by becoming a finalist in the prestigious Easy Food Home-Cook Hero Awards 2013. Run by Ireland’s number-one food magazine, Easy Food, this national cookery competition is open to all ages. The 2013 event was the most highly contested and popular year to date, drawing thousands of entries from across the country. Only three finalists were selected for each of the ten categories based on their unique, tasty, and creative recipes. Maria was chosen to compete in the highly competitive La Scala category, where she was the only student matching skills against two seasoned adult cooks—a previous category winner and a professional food blogger. 🍳 The Dublin Cook-Off Final On Saturday, 9th November 2013, Maria travelled to Dublin to take part in a high-pressure live cook-off final at the Cooks Academy Cookery School. She prepared her signature dish under the watchful eyes of a distinguished panel of celebrity judges: Kevin Dundon Dunbrody House Catherine Fulvio Ballyknocken House Gina Miltiadou Zahra Media Group The high-octane environment was captured by TV3 cameras, recording the skills of the finalists for a special television broadcast hosted by Martin King at the Shelbourne Hotel, which aired nationally on Saturday, 16th November 2013. 🧑‍🍳 Future in the Culinary Arts Maria, a passionate Home Economics student, is keen to pursue a career in the Culinary Arts after finishing her studies at Davitt College. As a testament to her talent, she will complete her Transition Year work experience module under the mentorship of renowned TV Chef Neven Maguire at MacNean House & Restaurant in Co. Cavan. “I was very excited to be chosen to compete in this National Competition. The standard was very high and it was great to see other contestants’ interpretations of their dishes. It was also great to work alongside chefs Kevin Dundon and Catherine Fulvio. The competition gave me great experience and was a fantastic opportunity.” — Maria, Transition Year Student 📈 Continued Excellence in Home Economics This incredible achievement marks the second major success for the Davitt College Home Economics Department in recent months, following past pupil Laura Ivers’ overall victory at the Sligo Connacht Gold Cookery Competition. Academic Milestone: In 2013, 100% of our Junior Certificate Home Economics students took the Higher Level paper, with final examination results far exceeding the national average. Culinary Finalist: Davitt College Transition Year student Maria, recognized nationally at the Easy Food Home-Cook Hero Awards live cook-off in Dublin.
