West Side Story

The 2000 Davitt College Production

Davitt College Stage Productions

Something's Coming

Jets and Sharks clash on the streets of New York. Relive Davitt College's milestone stage production of West Side Story from 2000.

The Story

Set in a New York ghetto, West Side Story explores the bitter rivalry between two teenage street gangs: the Jets and the Sharks. Amidst prejudice, hatred, and violence, a tragic romance blossoms when Tony falls in love with Maria, the sister of the Shark leader. Transforming Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet into a modern context, their forbidden love triggers a chain of events leading to a fateful rumble and a poignant search for hope in the final resolution.

The Production

Staged at Davitt College in March 2000 under the coordination of Project Manager Tommy O'Malley, this massive production was directed and choreographed by Peter Kennedy. Driven primarily as a Transition Year project with students deeply involved in set construction, staging, and publicity, the show featured musical direction by Phil Duffy and live accompaniment, culminating in unforgettable public performances and a special trip to Liverpool in May.
