Leaving Certificate Life, Community and Work (LCW) is an engaging, practical specification designed to educate the whole person and bridge the connection between classroom learning and adult life. As Davitt College actively rolls out the new national Senior Cycle Redevelopment, students follow specific curriculum pathways tailored to their entry cohort.

Designed for 120+ hours of class contact time focusing on personal development, transferable skillsets, and real-world career foundations.

The Interwoven Modules

Structured around two modern, non-linear modules driven by the experiential learning cycle (Participating, Reflecting, Applying):

Module 1: Me and my Future

Focuses on personal development, setting SMARTER goals, evaluating personal skillsets, and investigating diverse progression opportunities across Higher Education, FET, apprenticeships, and the world of work.

Module 2: Community and Work

Focuses on active local citizenship, design-thinking problem-solving for community issues, job application mastery (including AI recruitment tools), and a 3-day work placement.

60% Additional Assessment Component Portfolio in Action

An individual, multi-modal submission finalized in 6th Year in response to an official SEC brief, drawing on a digital portfolio compiled over two years.

40% Written Examination Terminal Paper

Assesses deep subject knowledge across all strands of study and the practical application of Applied Learning Tasks.

LCW bridges classroom learning with real-world application through four continuous Applied Learning Tasks (ALTs) driven by an experiential learning loop: Participating, Reflecting, and Applying.

Formulating self-reflective statements, mapping personal values, and setting SMARTER development goals.

ALT 2 • Module 1

Progression Plan

Mapping pathways across HE, FET, apprenticeships, traineeships, and local employment opportunities.

Community Task

Collaborative problem-solving using human-centred Design Thinking to address real-world local issues.

ALT 4 • Module 2

Workplace Action

Analysing mentor feedback post-placement and executing a personal skills progression plan.
